Java Tsunami 2006 Appeal - page 3

30 July 2006 - iNSEARCH owners Paul and Nicola return to their hotel in the village of Batukaras on the south coast of Java.  Total funds raised for the rebuilding project in the village are just under AU$10,000 !!

Nothing can prepare you for the shock of visiting a tsunami affected region.  Signs of the sheer force of the waves are visible everywhere: entire village areas swept away indiscriminately by the force of surging waters; tonnes of re-enforced concrete wrapped around palm trees; countless houses and buildings reduced to warzone-like rubble; once thriving beachfront bamboo cafes totally annihilated as if they were never there; ricefields reduced to parched patches of brown, sapped of all their life by unimaginable quantities of seawater; an old woman sits crying amongst the rubble that was once her home, returning daily with her granddaughter to work through her trauma as best she can.
