17 July 2006 - a major tsunami lashes parts of Java's southern coastline.  Coastal towns and villages cop the full brunt of the powerful waves and around 500 people perish.  The areas affected are well known to hundreds of 'iNSEARCH Travel' guests who have visited the coastal areas on the 'JavaSoul' surf trip.

JavaCove Beach Hotel is also located in a small fishing village on this coastline, but the hotel is not damaged in any way as the swell direction of the tsunami sends waves straight past the small cove in which the hotel is located.  The waves devastate the buildings and fishing boats further up the beach, leaving in their wake a confused local community who rely on the fishing boats for their livelihood.  iNSEARCH/JavaCove Beach Hotel owners Paul and Nicola are in Australia at the time of the tsunami so postpone their planned return to JavaCove to raise funds to assist in the re-building of the village.
